Led
by brothers Skip and Logan Matheny, Roman Candle comes from
the town of
Chapel Hill, North Carolina — a city with a rich and important
musical history.
The band’s debut album, dubbed Says Pop, fits comfortably
into that history, falling somewhere between the catchy guitar
hooks of Superchunk and the confessional storytelling of fellow
North Carolina native Ryan Adams.
Each song has the ability to transport the listener into the
lives of the characters
being portrayed in the lyrics. It’s a credit to Roman
Candle’s songwriting that its
songs are more like short films than journal entries.
This makes it very easy for the listener to find a reflection
of his or her self in the
lyrics and form an emotional attachment with the songs. The
radio-friendly, yet
sprawling pop of “Baby’s Got It In The Genes”
is as playful and unpretentious as
a serious song can be.
“I Wish I Was In New York” is better drinking music
than the stuff that gets played
at most country and western bars. It’s a good thing that
music can be hip without
trying to be.
